December 2000: Govardhana Hill Manifests in South India
After
establishing Sri Caitanya Matha in Vraja Pattan, Mayapura, His Divine
Grace Sri Srimad Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Prabhupada built a small Govardhana
hill on the premises. The hill was built with rocks found locally and
on the pinnacle a small mandapa containing a Deity of Giridhari
was installed.
Inspired by a recent visit to Caitanya Matha during Srila Puri Maharaja’s tirobhava celebrations, Srila Narasingha Maharaja returned to Narasingha Caitanya Matha to begin construction of a 8ft high, 6 ft wide Govardhana Hill.
Like it’s Mayapura counterpart, the hill will mainly consist of boulders found locally. A Govardhana-sila will adorn the peak when construction is completed. H.G. Radha-raman Dasa, a professional horticulturist from Hawaii, will help beautify the hill with bonzai trees, tulasi bushes and flowers.
Other features of the Govardhana Hill will be a
parikrama-marga, Radha Kunda and Syama Kunda (ponds), along with
a mandapa for the utsava-murtis of Sri Sri Radha Damodara.

COPPER-PLATE PROJECT BEGINS
Before the invention of the printing press,
books were written by hand. In Ancient India [see also Vedic
Age (opens in new window)] it was the custom of the brahmanas
to write the Vedic scriptures upon palm-leaves. The letters were etched
upon the leaves using a metal stylus, then a black powder was sprinkled
upon them and brushed off. The powder entered the finely etched lines
and remained there. The leaves were then treated with citronella which
preserved them for many, many years. However, most of these palm-leaf
scrolls did not withstand the test of time.
In some instances, pious kings would have scriptures
etched in copper, brass, silver and even gold. The obvious advantage of
this is that such metal plates would last for centuries. Although many
of these plates were lost, stolen by various foreign invaders, or melted
down, some of these plates still survive today in museums and temples
in India.
In
the month of November this year, Sri Narasingha Caitanya Matha revived
this ancient tradition of inscribing the sacred texts on copper plates
beginning with Sri Siksastakam by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Heading the
project is Srila Narasingha Maharaja, helped by Swami B.A. Tridandi Maharaja
and Swami B.V. Giri Maharaja.
In the near future it is hoped that other works such as Caitanyopanisad,
Sri Gayatri Nigudhartha, Upadesamrta and Kali Santaranaopanisad will also
be included.

INSTALLATION OF SRI SRI RADHA-DAMODARA
On the auspicious occasion of Bahulastami, on 20th
October of Kartika Masa, the arca-vigraha forms of Sri Sri Radha-Damodara
were installed at Sri Narasingha Caitanya Matha.
The Deities were first bathed with panca-gavya and pancamrta
before the prana-pratistha ceremony was performed by Srila Narasingha
Maharaja. A purusa-sukta homa was then performed with H.G. Nanda
Kisora as the hotr and H.H. Swami Bhakti Vijnana Giri as udgatr.
Oblations were offered with 108 names of Radha and Krsna and the festival
ended in hari-nama sankirtana and a feast.
